Good News for Dog Lovers

For all you Dog lovers out there: http://www.swissinfo.org/sen/swissinfo.html?siteSect=111&" title="http://www.swissinfo.org/sen/swissinfo.html?siteSect=111&" target="_blank"http://www.swissinfo.org/sen/...;sid=5425785

The future of St Bernard rescue dogs in the southwest of Switzerland has been secured. Dogs that rescue folk from avalanches and deliver brandy,  what could you not like about that (aside from the occasional slobbering lick :) )  ?

As we go through the various holidays at theend of the year I thought I would ask everyone to remember our boys and girls serving overseas.

It doesn't if you are so far to the left you make Dr.Forbush look like Rush... or so far to the right that you make Rush look like Al Franklen.. (apologies to Dr.Forbush for using his name :) )... sending a phone card to a soldier overseas so they can make a quick call home... or helping families be near their wounded ones is somthing that ought to be above politcs and your feelings on the war....

As the vehicles went around her, I soon saw her sitting there and in her arms she was clutching a little bear that we had handed her a few patrols back.  Feeling an immediate connection to the girl, I radioed that we were going to stop.  The rest of the convoy paused and I got out the make sure she was OK.  The little girl looked scared and concerned, but there was a warmth in her eyes toward me. As I knelt down to talk to her, she moved over and pointed to a mine in the road.

Immediately a cordon was set as the Marine convoy assumed a defensive posture around the site. The mine was destroyed in place.

Go read the rest.... No matter what the results of the elections.. in 10-15 years all those kids we've been helping are going to be all grown up.  Hearts and Minds...

The DEAD POOL

::crack of thunder and evil laughter in the background::

If you are a blogger.. you can join in this bit of morbid fun by either clicking on the grinning reaper at the bottom left or the dead pool link on my links list.

The Way it works is you select and submit a list of ten folk (who have to be well known and in the news now and again) who you think are just not going to manage to survive 2005 for one reason or another.   The top prize (which may go up if more folk donate) is a $40 dollar Amazon gift certificate.  So.. fire up those thinking caps.. and make your better off dead list.

Oh.. they also have a referal contest going on.. so if you DO join up tell em that LarryFALB  from Signal Noise was the one who refered ya :).

Soldier's Last Request

I read this over at: http://www.blackfive.net/main...
BlackFive's Site

Dear 1st Squad,

If you’re reading this, then I’ve died for our country. I just hope it wasn’t for nothing.

After the IED went off yesterday, I wanted to write this in case something happens to me. There are a few more letters that I’d like you to give my wife and family.

I’d like to have a military funeral, but, if you can work please make sure that Toby Keith’s “American Soldier” is played at the ceremony in addition to the bagpipes. If they won’t let it happen, that’s ok, thanks for trying…...

Go over there and read the rest... Soldier's Angels and others are asking Country stations around the country to play This song at 1PM on the day of his Funeral. Take a minute or two of your time.. go read this.. and contact a local country station..

THE SOLDIERS NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS
12.08.04 (9:08 pm)   [edit]

This is one of those poems that I think that folk who really care about our soldiers choke up over... So.. since its popping up all over as the various holidays approach I post the version of It that I've see that is my current favorite..

I make no claims to author credits or source of the poem.. These are as I received them.

THE SOLDIER'S NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

"THE SOLDIERS NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS"
By Major Bruce W. Lovely

    & nbsp;   &n bsp;   &nb sp;  ------------------------- ------------------------- ------------------------- ------------------------- ------------------------- --

(With Apologies to Clement Moore Who First Wrote the Story for His Children in 1822 also credit given to M/Sgt Noah  Brazos Ross, RA18033195, a USArmy 18th Field Artillery survivor of Utah Beach, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Battle for   the Ardennes, Deutschland  wrote "Daddy's Christmas" (Soldier's Christmas)" as a Bonita, Montague County, Texas,  highschool exercise in 1937)

------------------------- ------------------------- ------------------------- ------------------------- ------------------------- --

Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,

In a one bedroom house made of plaster & stone.

I had come down the chimney with presents to give

And to see just who in this home did live.

I looked all about a strange sight I did see,

No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.

No stocking by the fire, just boots filled with sand,

On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands.

With medals and badges, awards of all kind

A sober thought came through my mind.

For this house was different, so dark and dreary,

I knew I had found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly.

I heard stories about them, I had to see more

So I walked down the hall and pushed open the door.

And there he lay sleeping silent alone,

Curled up on the floor in his one bedroom home.

His face so gentle, his room in such disorder,

Not how I pictured a United States soldier.

Was this the hero of whom I'd just read?

Curled up in his poncho, a floor for his bed?

His head was clean shaven, his weathered face tan,

I soon understood this was more than a man.

For I realized the families that I saw that night

Owed their lives to these men who were willing to fight.

Soon 'round the world, the children would play,

And grownups would celebrate on a bright Christmas day.

They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year,

Because of soldiers like this one lying here.

I couldn't help wonder how many lay alone

On a cold Christmas Eve in a land far from home.

Just the very thought brought a tear to my eye,

I dropped to my knees and started to cry.

The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice,

"Santa don't cry, this life is my choice;

I fight for freedom, I don't ask for more,

my life is my God, my country, my Corps."

With that he rolled over and drifted off into sleep,

I couldn't control it, I continued to weep.

I watched him for hours, so silent and still,

I noticed he shivered from the cold night's chill.

So I took off my jacket, the one made of red,

And I covered this Soldier from his toes to his head.

And I put on his T-shirt of gray and black,

With an eagle and an Army patch embroidered on back.

And although it barely fit me, I began to swell with pride,

And for a shining moment, I was United States Army deep inside.

I didn't want to leave him on that cold dark night,

This guardian of honor so willing to fight.

Then the soldier rolled over, whispered with a voice so clean and pure,

"Carry on Santa, it's Christmas Day, all is secure."

One look at my watch, and I knew he was right,

Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a good night!
